The County of Galveston is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Road & Bridge Department. The role operates and maintains a wide range of construction equipment, supports roadways, bridges, and related infrastructure, and performs material loading, hauling, and light maintenance tasks.
Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, at least one year of related experience, and a valid state commercial driver’s license with a clean driving history.

The purpose of this class is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment to assist in the construction, repair and maintenance of county streets, drainage systems, beaches, and related infrastructure.
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Requires one year of experience in construction, maintenance or repairs of roadways, bridges, and operating heavy and light construction equipment or closely related experience.
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery and chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history. Ability and willingness to complete IC S 100, 200, 300 and 400 after hire.
