Job summary

Galveston County Human Resources is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to support Road & Bridge operations in Galveston County. You will operate and maintain road paving equipment, load materials, and assist in maintenance tasks on streets, beaches, and related infrastructure.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED and at least six months of construction or road maintenance experience, plus a valid state driver’s license. Outdoor work and exposure to dust, noise, and weather are expected.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains road paving construction equipment, including rollers, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, and water trucks.
  • Patches roadways, cuts brush, and picks up and disposes of trash and brush.
  • Loads and unloads large amounts and weights of materials and debris to and from trucks.
  • Drives a medium-sized truck to transport personnel, supplies, and materials.
  • May flag traffic as needed.
  • May perform housekeeping and facilities maintenance functions.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

General Description

The purpose of this class is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment to assist in the construction, repair, and maintenance of county streets, drainage systems, beaches, and related infrastructure.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below account for the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the class's work type as necessary.

  • Operates and maintains road paving construction equipment, including rollers, loaders, tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, and water trucks.
  • Patches roadways, cuts brush, and picks up and disposes of trash and brush.
  • Loads and unloads large amounts and weights of materials and debris to and from trucks.
  • Drives a medium-sized truck to transport personnel, supplies, and materials.
  • May flag traffic as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent.

The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery, and chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
