Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in Union Gap, WA is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2 (In-Training) to join our South-Central Region. You will inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide range of vehicles and equipment to keep the fleet safe and ready.

This in-training role requires a Class B CDL within 12 months, ability to work nights and weekends, and strong shop skills, including diesel, electric, hydraulic systems, welding, and safety compliance.

Qualifications

• Heavy Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and vehicles over 26,000 GVW.
• Shop Operations and Tools: operate and maintain a variety of mechanic tools and shop equipment.
• Safety Awareness and Compliance: follow safety policies including confined space, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
• Technical and Administrative Proficiency: use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, and inventory management.
• Teamwork: work well in a team and individually.

Responsibilities

• Independently perform preventative maintenance and repairs to agency vehicles and equipment.
• Maintain, diagnose, and repair diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative fuel engines.
• Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot hydraulic and control systems including pumps, motors, valves, and hydrostatic drives.
• Maintain braking systems and diagnose/repair brake components across types.
• Diagnose and repair snow and ice removal equipment and related heavy equipment.
• Fabricate, weld and install additional equipment and components.
