Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) seeks a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2 (In-Training) for the Union Gap, WA shop. You’ll perform journey-level mechanical work on a wide range of vehicles and equipment to keep the fleet safe and reliable.

Under supervision you will diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel, gasoline, electric and alternative-fuel engines; service hydraulic and brake systems; fabricate and weld components; and manage parts and work orders.

Qualifications

• Heavy Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance: Preventive maintenance, repairs and fabrication on heavy equipment and vehicles over 26,000 GVW; includes testing/dialing out operational issues.
• Shop Operations and Tools: Skilled with automotive tools and shop equipment including welders, hoists, air tools, grinders, forklifts, hand tools.
• Safety Awareness and Compliance: Strong safety knowledge; participation in safety plans and training.
• Technical and Administrative Proficiency: Experience with maintenance tracking, parts ordering, work orders, and fleet records; proficient in MS Office.
• Teamwork: Works well in teams and individually; supports a respectful, inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

• Independently perform preventative maintenance and repairs on agency vehicles and equipment used in highway maintenance and construction.
• Diagnose and repair diesel, gasoline, electric and alternative-fuel engines; restore to reliable condition.
• Maintain, diagnose, and troubleshoot hydraulic and control systems, including pumps, motors, valves, and hydrostatic drives.
• Repair braking systems (air, mechanical, hydraulic, ABS) and related components; assist with diagnostics and repairs.
• Perform diagnostic work on snow/ice removal equipment and heavy machinery; operate and test vehicles as needed.
• Fabricate, weld and install additional equipment and components.
