Job summary

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking two Heavy Equipment Mechanic 4 positions based in Seattle and Mount Vernon. These roles supervise maintenance operations, manage budgets, and ensure equipment readiness to support the public transportation system. Work is indoors in offices and repair facilities with some outdoor exposure.

Qualifications

• Supervise others and diagnose, repair, and overhaul a wide range of heavy-duty equipment systems.
• Ability to train and supervise a diverse workforce and promote safety in shop and field environments.
• Proficient in Fleet Equipment Management software and standard office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Clear, professional written and verbal communication with mechanics, supervisors, vendors, and stakeholders.
• Strong knowledge of safety standards and ability to implement safety programs and PASP where applicable.
• Must possess an unrestricted valid driver’s license and obtain Class A CDL with N endorsement within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and review the work of heavy equipment mechanics and purchasing staff.
• Oversee inspection, repair, maintenance, and compliance on vehicles and equipment used in highway maintenance.
• Assist with budgets, replacement schedules, and fleet logistical support plans.
• Utilize fleet management systems to track data, work orders, and inventories.
• Coordinate purchasing, vendor relations, and equipment availability and warranties.
• Lead fleet-related projects, training, and demonstrations.
