Job description

Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) serves as the subject matter expert for all rental large equipment (LE) maintenance, inspections, and repairs. Ensuring all assigned LE fleet is rental ready for our customers. The HET provides LE technical expertise to store TRC associates, Mobile Service Technicians, and customers, completing routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of the rental fleet in assigned stores. The HET plans and coordinates their day by balancing rental business objectives and customer service demands. Upholding The Home Depot’s core values and projecting a positive image are essential. Following safety policies and procedures is critical to perform their role effectively. All associates are responsible for providing a safe working environment by adhering to safety policies and standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Preventative Maintenance and Repairs
2. Maintain a fleet of rental equipment at store, shop locations, and customer sites. Ensure inventory accuracy and GPS system functionality, with security on towable equipment.
3. Perform major repairs on LE fleet, diagnosing faults, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing components such as engines, hydraulics, electrical, fuel, and brake systems.
4. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and order parts within 48 hours of a tool being placed on the Down List, notifying the Regional Rental Manager of delays.

Daily Responsibilities

• Foster a customer service culture, engaging with TRC associates to provide solutions for rental customers.
• Obtain parts for repairs, maintain accurate parts inventory.
• Assist with equipment deployment, pre-delivery inspections, deliveries, and auctions.
• Communicate effectively with store TRC associates, teammates, and customers, documenting all work on equipment using company technology platforms.
• Prioritize workflow, improve efficiency, and ensure timely completion of all service tasks, safety campaigns, and inspections.
• Maintain vehicle compliance with regulations, including Electronic Logging Device (ELD) and Hours of Service (HOS) logs.
• Coordinate with RRM to train store TRCs on LE standards, SOPs, and best practices.
• Respond to customer service calls, providing status updates and facilitating repairs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Safety and Compliance

Adhere to all safety protocols, including safe driving, proper lifting techniques, PPE usage, and Hazmat procedures. Maintain certifications for Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP) and store inspection compliance. Ensure all work complies with company, provincial, and transportation regulations.

Skills and Qualifications

• Experience in customer service, mechanical repairs, and equipment maintenance.
• Strong work ethic, ability to work independently, and excellent time management.
• Proficiency with handheld technology and tools of the trade.
• Ability to diagnose and repair complex mechanical systems.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and load securement.

Additional Requirements

• Trade certification in heavy-duty equipment (provincial or interprovincial).
• Legally permitted to work in Canada, residing within 25 km of the target city or willing to commute.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., work outdoors in various conditions, and perform physical tasks.
• Must pass a background check and have a valid driver’s license.
