Job summary

Sterling St James Inc. in Richmond, VA, is seeking an Assistant Project Manager for heavy civil and highway projects. You will work with a Senior PM on active projects, managing submittals, RFIs, procurement, and field coordination.

This is a hands-on role with real responsibility from day one, including cost tracking, schedule updates, and owner/inspector interface, with relocation assistance possible for the right candidate.

Qualifications

• 3–10 years on heavy civil, highway, or utility projects.
• Experience with scheduling and cost tracking; HeavyJob/Bluebeam/P6 a plus.
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license; travel is primarily local.
• Based in or willing to relocate to the Richmond area.

Responsibilities

• Manage submittals, RFIs, and procurement schedules to keep field crews on schedule.
• Coordinate subcontractors and supplier purchase orders to protect schedule commitments.
• Track quantities, production, and costs; flag variances early.
• Support monthly payment requisitions, cost projections, and project documentation.
• Attend weekly project team meetings and contribute to schedule and cost reviews.
• Support a safety culture that's instilled on the project.
