Job summary

UnityPoint Health is seeking a Document Processing Specialist to prepare and scan medical records for integration into the electronic patient record. You will ensure records are indexed and verified per HIM guidelines and communicate issues affecting quality or timely processing.

The role involves daily workflow management, collaboration with care teams, and adherence to standardized procedures to support accurate patient billing and clinical documentation.

Qualifications

• Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Preferred: Completion of a Health Information Management program.
• Required: Previous work history in health information services/medical records department or office experience.
• Preferred: One to three years of experience with an electronic health record or hospital/medical setting.
• Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Responsibilities

• Accurately prepare paper medical records for scanning following standardized HIM guidelines.
• Scan paper records into the electronic health record using a scanning device.
• Index and verify medical record images into the EHR following guidelines.
• Release batches to quality review queues or into patient records.
• Monitor image flow from network folders and meet quality standards.
• Assist in training new hires as needed.
• Report system or workflow issues to leadership.
• Perform quality control and processing of reports as requested.
• Retrieve paper documents from defined locations.
