Job summary

UnityPoint Health – St. Luke's, Sioux City Downtown, is seeking a Health Unit Assistant to provide essential administrative support on a busy surgery/ urology unit. This full-time role offers standard 40-hour weeks, Monday–Friday, with a daytime schedule.

The HUA acts as a central contact for staff, patients and families, performing clerical tasks and aiding in patient flow on a fast-paced unit. Ideal candidates have a high school diploma (associate degree preferred) and 1–2 years of healthcare

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • Associate degree or higher preferred.
  • 1–2 years of administrative experience, ideally in healthcare.
  • Experience with computers and ability to learn computer skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Greet all customers (internal and external) and answer phones with proper etiquette; coordinate patient care needs as directed.
  • Type and proofread various materials (correspondence, reports, charts, memos, policies).
  • Order office and unit supplies and keep nurses’ station organized.
  • Review daily charge capture for accuracy and integrity.

The Health Unit Assistant (HUA) provides essential administrative and clerical support to ensure smooth operations within a healthcare unit. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. The HUA serves as a central point of contact for staff, patients, families, and other departments, assisting with administrative functions, patient flow, and assisting with unit activities.

Responsibilities
Administrative
  • Displays excellent receptionist skills in greeting all customers including both internal and external. Answers phone and call light with proper phone etiquette, and sensitivity to the needs of the caller. Contacts staff immediately for patient care needs or assists with patient needs. Assists physicians as needed.
  • Performs administrative activities for assigned Nursing Director/Manager such as typing and proofing a variety of materials; e.g. correspondence, reports, charts, memos, policies and procedures.
Accountability
  • Orders needed office supplies, or other supplies as needed for the areas. Organizes nurses’ station to keep records neat and well organized.
  • Review daily charge capture for accuracy.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria
  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
Qualifications
Education
  • High school graduate of GED equivalent required.
  • Associate degree or higher is preferred.
Experience
  • Experience with computers and ability to learn computer skills required.
  • One to two years of administrative experience, preferably in a healthcare setting with demonstrated communication skills desired.
License(s)/Certification(s)
  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons required.
