Summary:

The Health & Safety Specialist administers the plant safety program intended to reduce or eliminate industrial injuries, illnesses, or losses from equipment or property damage. This position promotes plant operation per federal and state safety laws and regulations and plant and corporate policies and initiatives. The position promotes the plant and corporation's positive safety and health image in the community.

What you’ll be contributing:

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
  • Monitors facilities and processes to adhere to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) guidelines and eliminate industrial accidents.
  • Assists, evaluates, and continuously improves the facility's safety program to achieve and maintain zero-harm goals.
  • Observes random department audits and walks to ensure they are conducted with rigor and intensity.
  • Works with supervisors and other plant personnel to develop plant safety procedures for their work areas/tasks and ensures that they are consistently followed.
  • Ensures employee's annual new hire tasks and periodic or refresher safety training are completed, documented, and organized electronically and/or physically as instructed by the Safety Manager or designee.
  • Maintains plant's incident database and ensures monthly audits are completed.
  • Ensures all safety binders are kept current and maintains all SDSs and other plant-related safety records by all company procedures and requirements.
  • Conducts or coordinates all employee safety orientations, industrial hygiene testing, classroom safety training, and practical hands-on plant safety training.
  • Monitors, audits, and documents Contractor Safety Management System Requirements in coordination with the Safety Manager.
  • Works toward compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws and regulations.
  • Accompanies inspectors during inspections and maintains all required records regarding safety activities/regulations.
  • Serves as liaison with the Safety Manager, the plant, and safety regulatory agencies in coordination with plant and corporate safety personnel.
  • Facilitates the Health and Safety Committee and oversees plant safety project work and teams.
  • Continuously strives to learn and understand plant processes.
  • Assist in detailed and thorough investigations for all accidents, incidents, injuries, or near misses.
  • Recommends and applies safety improvements in the operations.
  • Leads in implementing new systems or processes.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

To succeed in this position, you will need:

  • Minimum of 4 year/bachelors degree in industrial hygiene, safety management, or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in mining, industrial environment, or safety-related field
  • Ability to read, write, and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.
  • Proficient in English written, verbal communication, and listening skills
  • Ability to solve problems with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work and maintain composure under pressure
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations
  • Ability to use and maintain databases used to store MSHA citation records as well as industrial hygiene data, injury and accident investigation data, and behavioral safety observations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Must promote the use of The Health Bridge (nurse management firm) and the company's early return-to-work program, including the use of bridge assignments
  • Ability to maintain personal proficiency level by attending appropriate professional development
  • Ability to analyze facts and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at a conclusion
  • Ability to work with company and plant policies and objectives
  • Ability to refer to plant Safety Manager or corporate safety personnel when clarification or interpretation of organization policy
  • Assist with MSHA and safety-related documents per the Safety Manager's request
