Job description

Overview
About Glen Oak Country Club

The origins of Glen Oak Country Club date back to the 1940s, when a group of prominent Scranton businessmen recognized the need for an alternative private country club in the region. After an extensive search between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, they ultimately discovered the ideal property in Clarks Summit.

In September 1951, the Oakford Estate became available, and 16 founding members each contributed $100 to secure an option on the approximately 138-acre property. The estate included the Oakford family's summer residence, a barn, and two bungalows that remain in use today. The purchase officially closed on December 27, 1951.

Harold Phillips was elected the Club's first president, and Ely S. Lipsins served as its first secretary. Initially operating as the Excelsior Social Club after acquiring the liquor license from the Excelsior Club in downtown Scranton, the organization officially adopted the name Glen Oak Country Club on December 7, 1952.

The original Oakford residence was converted into the Club's first dining facility in July 1952. The dining room was expanded in 1955, followed by a major kitchen renovation in 1971. After the historic Main House was destroyed by fire on November 25, 1978, it was replaced with a locker room facility. The Club's current clubhouse was completed on August 17, 1987.

Golf has been central to Glen Oak since its inception. Shortly after the Club was established, renowned golf course architect James Harrison was commissioned to design the course. Construction began during the summer of 1952 under the direction of Isadore Spitz and Irving Jackman. The first nine holes opened for play on October 11, 1953, while the second nine began construction in 1959 and officially opened on June 3, 1961. At that time, the course was reconfigured into the 18-hole routing enjoyed by members today.

Today, Glen Oak Country Club proudly continues the vision of its founders by offering an exceptional private club experience built on a rich tradition of golf, fellowship, and outstanding service.
