Position Overview

Title: Head Golf Professional

Reports to: General Manager

Supervises: Assistant Golf Professionals, Retail & Golf Shop Associates, Outside Golf Services Team, and Seasonal Staff

Position Description: Heritage Club, a premier, member‑owned private country club located in Mason, Ohio, is seeking a visible, energetic, and service‑minded Head Golf Professional to lead its comprehensive golf operations. This executive leadership opportunity arises due to the upcoming retirement of long‑time Head Golf Professional Michael Murphy, PGA, who has served the membership with distinction for nearly 20 years. Set across 207 immaculately maintained acres, the facility features an 18‑hole P.B. Dye championship golf course, world‑class practice amenities, and a capped equity membership of 295 members operating under a traditional “no tee time” policy. The Head Golf Professional serves as the primary steward of the club’s golf culture, combining high‑level operational strategy with a passionate, “hands‑on” approach to member engagement, tournament execution, retail management, and player development. The ideal candidate will build upon a proud tradition of leadership by modeling a “member‑first” hospitality mindset and fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and family‑friendly atmosphere across the entire facility.

Essential Job Functions
Golf Operations & Member Experience
  • Manage all daily golf shop and outside service operations, establishing standard operating procedures for bag drop, golf car fleet management, staging, and range operations.
  • Oversee daily play flow under the club’s traditional “no tee time” framework, ensuring consistent pace of play, equitable course access, and exceptional on‑course service.
  • Serve as the authority on the USGA Rules of Golf, local rules, and course etiquette, enforcing club policies with diplomacy, consistency, and professional tact.
  • Play golf regularly with a broad cross‑section of the membership to build authentic relationships, gather feedback, and stay connected to the member experience.
Tournament & Event Administration
  • Plan, promote, and execute a vibrant annual calendar of member events, club championships, twilight leagues, and social golf gatherings.
  • Utilize GolfGenius tournament management software for event setup, online registrations, pairing generation, live scoring, and professional signage.
  • Partner with the Golf Course Superintendent on course preparation and the Food & Beverage team to ensure seamless dining and social execution during events.
Retail & Merchandising Management
  • Direct all golf shop retail operations, including buying, visual merchandising, open‑to‑buy planning, inventory control, and vendor relationships.
  • Curate a premium merchandise mix of soft goods, hard goods, and customized Heritage Club logo apparel tailored to the demographics of the membership.
  • Drive retail sales through special member shopping events, demo days, custom fitting programs, and competitive pricing strategies.
Instruction & Player Development
  • Establish and oversee a comprehensive instruction program catering to all skill levels, including men, women, high‑handicappers, and new golfers.
  • Fully utilize the club’s 27,000‑square‑foot putting green, expanded driving range, and dedicated short‑game areas by incorporating modern launch monitor and fitting technology (e.g., TrackMan, Foresight).
  • Design and execute dynamic junior golf camps, clinics, and PGA Junior League programs to engage young families and foster the next generation of golfers.
Staff Leadership & Team Building
  • Recruit, train, schedule, mentor, and evaluate Assistant Professionals, Golf Shop associates, and Outside Services personnel.
  • Champion a team culture rooted in hospitality, accountability, and professional growth, creating clear career advancement pathways for assistant professionals.
  • Conduct regular operational staff briefings to align the team on daily service standards, member preferences, and upcoming event logistics.
Financial, Governance & Administrative Duties
  • Assist the General Manager in developing annual operating and capital budgets for the golf department.
  • Manage operational expenses, payroll, and retail margins diligently to achieve approved financial goals.
  • Act as the professional liaison to the Golf Committee, attending meetings and providing data‑driven updates on rounds, event participation, and operational trends.
CORE CANDIDATE PROFILE & ATTRIBUTES
  • Highly Visible Leader: Consistently present on the first tee, in the golf shop, and across the practice facilities, acting as an approachable ambassador for Heritage Club rather than managing from behind a desk.
  • Master of the “No Tee Time” Model: Exhibits deep operational fluidity and tact in managing daily play, starter operations, and pace of play within an unreserved tee sheet structure.
  • Hospitality & Member‑First Mindset: Demonstrates an unwavering commitment to elevating the member and guest experience through personalized service, warm recognition, and active listening.
  • Growth‑Oriented & Forward‑Thinking: Proactive about driving event participation, introducing fresh event formats, and expanding junior and family programming to nurture club culture.
  • Collaborative Communicator: Works seamlessly with the General Manager, Golf Course Superintendent, Food & Beverage Director, and the Golf Committee to deliver an integrated club experience.
  • Financial & Retail Savvy: Combines a strong business acumen with a modern retail approach to curate a high‑end golf shop that reflects member preferences and hits financial targets.
Experience And Qualifications

Including, but not limited to, the following:

Certifications & Standing

  • Section Standing: Active involvement in the candidate’s current PGA Section, with an expectation of becoming actively engaged in the Southern Ohio PGA Section.
