Job summary

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking a Manager of Visual Materials Description to ensure accurate bibliographical description of rare and unique items across visual formats. You will oversee cataloging workflows, standards, and collaboration with curatorial teams and technical services to support access and discovery.

Applicants should hold an MLS/MLIS and have substantial experience in special collections cataloging, with expertise in standards like RDA, DCRM, and MARC.

Qualifications

• MLS/MLIS or related advanced degree with library experience in special collections.
• 5+ years cataloging visual materials in a research/library/museum setting.
• Experience with born-digital materials and metadata crosswalks.
• Ability to work across teams and communicate with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Perform original and copy cataloging of visual materials per standards.
• Plan and manage visual materials cataloging workflows aligned to strategic goals.
• Develop and maintain departmental cataloging documentation with key partners.
• Participate in institution-wide cataloging standards development.
• Lead initiatives to improve discovery and access of visual materials.
• Oversee quality control of cataloging and metadata.
