Job summary

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking a Manager of Visual Materials Description to oversee cataloging for rare and unique visual materials in the Library Services Center, Long Island City. You will ensure accurate bibliographical description across photographs, prints, illustrations, and related items, aligning with national and local standards.

Qualifications

• Must hold ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or advanced degree in a related field with substantial library experience in special collections.
• 5+ years cataloging visual materials in a research/library setting; 3+ years managing complex cataloging projects.
• Experience with born-digital material; knowledge of descriptive standards (RDA, DACS, MARC).
• Experience creating metadata crosswalks; migrating metadata between systems.
• Ability to collaborate across technical services, curatorial and public services; strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform and oversee original and copy cataloging for visual materials (photos, prints, illustrations, etc.) according to national and local standards.
• Plan, coordinate, and manage visual materials cataloging workflows aligned with institutional priorities.
• Develop and maintain departmental cataloging documentation with key partners.
• Contribute to institution-wide cataloging standards and cross-team collaboration.
• Lead or contribute to projects advancing description, discovery, and access of visual materials.
