Job summary

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is seeking a Manager of Visual Materials Description to ensure precise bibliographical description across visual materials and to lead the cataloging function in alignment with national and local standards.

This role works within Rare Materials Cataloging at NYPL’s Library Services Center in Long Island City, Queens, collaborating with curators, technical services, and public services to advance access and description.

Qualifications

• Perform and oversee original and copy cataloging for visual materials.
• Plan, coordinate, and manage visual materials cataloging workflows.
• Develop and maintain departmental cataloging documentation.
• Participate in development of institution-wide cataloging standards.
• Lead or contribute to strategic initiatives for description, discovery, and access.

Responsibilities

• Review and evaluate cataloging work to ensure accuracy, quality, consistency.
• Contribute to organizational tasks related to the receipt and accessioning of acquisitions and data maintenance in catalogs.
• Maintain bibliographic and descriptive data in NYPL’s ILS, Sierra, and other systems.
• Lead or contribute to projects that advance description, discovery, and access of visual materials.
• Represent NYPL in professional organizations and collaborative projects.
