Job summary

The Director of Custodial Services at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools oversees cleaning programs across district properties, ensuring compliance with laws and Board policies while reporting to the Executive Director of Building Services.

This senior role leads staff, manages budgets, safety, and equipment, conducts inspections, and drives continuous improvement through data and work order systems, fostering a positive campus environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required.
• Minimum of three years in a managerial level position preferred.
• Equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.
• Lead, manage, supervise, and evaluate assigned programs/staff in the district.
• Implement and manage the solid waste and recycling program for the school system.
• Lead and supervise campus grounds and custodial staff, ensuring coverage, accountability, and quality performance.
• Conduct regular inspections to maintain a clean, safe, and visually appealing campus environment.
• Ensure compliance with safety, chemical handling, and environmental regulations.
• Coordinate support for facility use, emergencies, and seasonal operations.
• Use data and work order systems to track performance and drive continuous improvement.
• Promote a culture of customer service, teamwork, and pride in the campus appearance.
• Establish an efficient custodial organization focusing on quality service with timely response and resolution.
• Assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor workflow and evaluate work products.
• Conduct periodic site visits to monitor quality control, safety and sanitary compliance.
• Ensure all sites are clean, safe, and up to code in accordance with laws and regulations.
• Design and implement training programs for custodial staff; revise handbooks and procedures.
• Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly.
• Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training.
• Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations.
• Support development of the department's improvement plan.
• Perform related work as assigned.
