Substack is seeking a Head of People to build and scale our People function at a pivotal growth stage. You will own strategy, systems, and programs for hiring, development, rewards, and support across the organization.

This role is both strategic and hands-on, shaping org design, talent strategy, and workforce planning while also improving day-to-day People operations and supporting managers directly. Ideal candidates bring 8+ years in People/HR, startup experience, and a track record of

Qualifications

• 8+ years of progressive experience in People/HR with multi-functional leadership.
• Experience in startup or growth-stage environments.
• Proven ability to influence executive leadership and coach managers.

Responsibilities

• Partner with leadership to develop a people strategy aligned with Substack's mission and goals.
• Lead and scale recruiting, onboarding, compensation, benefits, and employee experience.
• Own compensation, benefits, leveling frameworks, and performance cycles.
• Build training, L&D, and leadership coaching programs.
• Shape employee experience, onboarding, and orientation.
• Lead recruiting strategy to hire exceptional people.
• Advise on org design, workforce planning, and succession planning.
• Develop and improve people systems, policies, and programs.
• Coach managers on performance and team effectiveness.
• Oversee employee relations and ensure lawful compliance.
• Use analytics and workforce insights to guide decisions.
• Build and mentor a high-performing People team.
