Job summary

Genentech's Innovation Accelerator Data Science team seeks a Head of IA Data Science to drive technical excellence across design, data and data science innovation programs. This role shapes the roadmap, leads a multidisciplinary team, and ensures scalable, compliant solutions in collaboration with Roche partners.

You bring 15+ years in software/data science, 4+ years leadership, and deep expertise in Python/R and ML libraries.

Qualifications

• 15+ years hands-on experience in software engineering, data science, or technical innovation, ideally within R&D or regulated environments.
• 4+ years in a leadership role managing multidisciplinary technical teams.
• Proficient with Python or R, and ML libraries such as scikit-learn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Fluent in agile delivery, DevOps, or other modern ways of working.
• Mentoring colleagues and driving team development.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across early exploration and productization phases of innovation projects.
• Act as SME and escalation point for applied data science and software engineering within the portfolio.
• Influence strategy and roadmaps through strategic technical leadership.
• Make architectural decisions ensuring scalability, performance, reliability and compliance.
• Oversee execution quality, risk management, and project velocity across multiple workstreams.
• Set and enforce technical standards enabling reuse and robust design.
• Lead capacity planning and resource deployment within the team.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate opportunities into feasible solutions.
• Drive portfolio governance, planning, and progress reviews.
• Identify and integrate new technologies and platforms to maximize department performance.
• Ensure documentation and engineering practices support traceability and reproducibility.
• Manage a multidisciplinary team with accountability for delivery and development.
• Oversee hiring, onboarding, workforce planning, and succession.
