Job summary

Alta Resource Technologies is seeking a Head of Data Science and Automation in Boulder, CO to own the data and automation backbone behind our research, development, and scale-up. This is a hands-on, director-level role, building and leading a small team of data and automation engineers.

You will own data pipelines, LIMS/ELN, instrument integration, and the central data platform, enabling rapid, reproducible design-build-test-scale cycles and data-driven decisions across R&D and manufacturing

Qualifications

• 8–10 years of relevant experience in biotech, pharma, or industrial bioprocessing.
• Demonstrated people leadership and hands-on contributor.
• Proven track record delivering data and automation systems that accelerate R&D or manufacturing.
• Hands-on experience designing and running production data pipelines (Python and SQL, cloud platforms).
• Experience administering LIMS/ELN and sample management systems.
• Experience integrating laboratory instruments and process equipment (SCADA, PLC, OPC UA, Modbus, process historians).
• Knowledge of statistics, experimental design, and data quality/integrity.
• Strong software engineering practices: version control, testing, documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to translate between scientists, engineers, and leadership.
• Must be a US person per ITAR/EAR

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain data pipelines from instruments and LIMS into a central platform.
• Define data models, metadata standards, and ontologies for traceability.
• Deliver analysis-ready datasets to the computational biology team.
• Implement data quality monitoring and provenance tracking.
• Provide statistical analysis and dashboards to speed decisions.
• Manage LIMS/ELN and sample management systems.
• Integrate instruments and process equipment to reduce manual data entry.
• Integrate liquid handlers, plate readers, and analytical instruments into automated workflows.
• Integrate chromatography pilot and demonstration systems, bioreactors, fermentation, and process equipment.
• Partner with build/test/scale teams to optimize throughput and cycle time.
• Ensure data integrity and OT security; scale toward GxP if needed.
• Hire, mentor, and develop a small data/automation team.
• Balance hands-on contribution with leadership; document SOPs and training.
• Communicate roadmaps and manage vendors and budgets.
