Job summary

Michigan Health and Hospital Association Service Corporation is seeking a hands-on Lead, Data & AI Engineering to build the data layer and intelligence atop it. You will own ingestion, modeling, governance, and serving across the company, partnering with Product and Engineering to ship AI- and LLM-powered features.

This is a player-coach role: design pipelines, develop data models, and prototype AI capabilities while managing a small team of 2–4 engineers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field.
• 7+ years building data and/or backend systems in production.
• Hands-on data engineering and applied AI/ML experience.
• Proven ownership of a data platform: SQL and Python, and modern tooling like Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, and orchestration (Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect).

Responsibilities

• Architect and build MHC's core data platform: ingestion, transformation, storage, and serving layers for batch and streaming workloads.
• Model data for analytics and product use cases with a semantic, reusable dataset layer.
• Establish data quality, lineage, observability, and governance practices.
• Build pipelines and embedding stores feeding analytics, ML, and LLM applications.
• Mine raw data into metrics, signals, predictions, and document understanding.
• Productize AI features with guardrails, evaluation, and cost controls.
• Lead, mentor, and grow a small team of 2–4 data and AI engineers; set standards and roadmap.
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders to align data/AI roadmap.
