Job summary

Substack is seeking an elite financial strategist to own the long-term financial engine and build a world-class FP&A team. You’ll drive the budgeting process, lead a high-caliber finance organization, and partner with the CEO and executive team on strategic planning.

You will architect AI-powered finance workflows, automate modeling, and deliver driver-based budgets and scenario analyses to inform pricing, product investment, and growth initiatives.

Qualifications

• 5–10 years total experience, with foundation at top investment bank, PE, or consulting, followed by high-impact FP&A/Strategic Finance at a fast-growing tech company.
• Proven leadership ability to recruit, manage, and mentor quantitative talent and scale a team.
• AI-native mindset with use of automation and modern tools to reduce manual work and elevate strategic problem-solving.
• Experience running company-wide budgeting processes, cross-functional alignment, and headcount planning.
• Mastery of financial modeling and data manipulation, including Snowflake/Looker/Python or modern FP&A stack.
• Executive presence to translate complex outputs into concise recommendations for CEO, CFO and Board.

Responsibilities

• Hire, develop, and lead a high-performing FP&A team and shape the culture and standards.
• Architect an AI-powered finance organization with automation and modern data workflows.
• Design and lead Substack’s annual budget cycle and rolling quarterly forecasts with driver-based budgets.
• Manage Budget vs. Actuals and variance analysis with accountability across departments.
• Build and maintain a multi-year three-statement corporate model aligned to strategic goals.
• Analyze creator economics, monetization, take-rates, LTV/CAC, churn, and margins to inform pricing and investments.
• Prepare board decks and investor updates, articulating scenarios and capital-raise plans.
