Job description

Position Purpose

The Head Cook is responsible for the daily preparation and seasoning of foods, serving breakfast, lunch, and snacks according to recipes using various kitchen utensils and equipment. The role includes washing dishes and utensils used in food preparation, maintaining inventory of kitchen equipment and food, preparing reports required by funding sources, and purchasing food and supplies for the program.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Inspire Development Centers provides Early Childhood Education (ECE) and social services to over 4,000 children across more than 25 Child Development Centers in Washington. The organization operates under various federal and state-funded programs, including Regional Head Start, Migrant Seasonal Head Start, ECEAP, and Early Head Start, adhering to their regulations. A majority of the children served speak Spanish as their first language.

Supervisory and Other Relationships

The Head Cook reports to the Center Manager, coordinates activities with other cooks, and works closely with Nutritionists, Staff, the Core Team, and Center Staff, especially around children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Prepare nourishing, attractive, and well-balanced meals in accordance with USDA/CACFP and Head Start/ECEAP standards and WAC regulations. Review menu changes with the Center Nurse, Health Assistant, or Director for approval.
  2. Maintain safety and sanitation standards in food preparation, storage, and serving, complying with licensing requirements and WSMC procedures.
  3. Post health and food regulations and maintain USDA daily meal records.
  4. Manage food inventory, including dating, rotating, and requesting necessary items in coordination with the Center Director.
  5. Clean and disinfect kitchen facilities, equipment, utensils, and appliances daily.
  6. Participate in center activities, including those with parents, such as meetings and family events, which may occur evenings or weekends. Collaborate with Teachers on nutrition-related classroom activities.
