The Head Baseball Coach position requires an individual who can successfully recruit, sign, and instruct players that are capable of playing their sport on the collegiate level while maintaining the academic standards established by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Shelton State Community College (SSCC). Management skills are necessary for such tasks as handling budgets, scheduling travel, and submitting reports. The head coach is ultimately responsible for leading a team that reflects favorably upon SSCC both on and off the field.
SALARY SCHEDULE PLACEMENT
Range of $70,260 - $107,176, based upon the 2026-2027 Alabama Community College System and Shelton State Community College Salary Schedule C3-1 to be determined by the applicant’s education and years of applicable experience. Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the game and rules of baseball and be able to effectively communicate this knowledge to the team
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills in coordinating and supervising the baseball program
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to work cooperatively with student athletes, other athletic department staff and the faculty/staff of Shelton State Community College as a whole
- Work independently in leading the baseball program at Shelton State Community College
Secondary Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Recruit and sign the very best student-athletes to represent Shelton State Community College
- Use coaching and motivational skills to assemble individuals into a winning team
- Work with student-athletes and faculty in registration, scheduling classes, and monitoring academic progress
- Work within approved budgets and prepare necessary reports required by the athletic department, the business office, the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) and the NJCAA
- Securing and maintaining facilities for their sports program and maintain an appropriate inventory of athletic equipment and supplies
- Maintain appropriate office hours and work schedule according to the full-time employee requirements of the Shelton State Community College Personnel Handbook. Appropriate time sheets and/or leave forms must be kept to account for hours worked
- Supervise the day-to-day operations of the baseball program, including but not limited to scheduling of practices and games; securing game officials, recruiting, purchasing, and maintaining equipment, uniforms, and supplies; completing necessary paperwork; fund raising, and being present at required meetings and school functions
- Maintain effective verbal/written communications with the athletic department, admissions, and the Shelton State Community College administration
- Display appropriate communication skills in contact with parents, student-athletes, and recruiters (letters, telephone calls, personal appointments)
- Establish a good working relationship with community leaders and fellow coaches
- Maintain appropriate student training records
- Provide for the safety, security, inventory control, and use of assigned equipment and other fixed assets
- Establish meaningful and effective working relationships with other divisions, departments, administrators, faculty, and staff as necessary to enhance operational efficiency and effective communication, coordination, and teamwork
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Comply with policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College
- Serve on College committees as required
- Participate in professional development, compliance, performance excellence and training activities as required
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor
REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Essential knowledge of National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules
- Minimum of three years college coaching experience in baseball
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work weekdays, evenings, and holidays
PREFERRED
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Coaching experience at the two-year college level
- Collegiate playing experience
- Recruiting experience at the Collegiate level
