Neighborhood Defender Service in Harlem seeks a Litigation Assistant to join the Family Defense Practice for a 12-month, full-time temporary assignment. You will support attorneys, social workers, and advocates through every phase of Article 10 and related family court matters.

The role requires strong organizational skills, clear communication, and the ability to manage confidential records, discovery, and court filings.

Qualifications

• Commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, racial equity, and social justice.
• Ability to quickly build relationships with people of varying identities, incomes, races and ethnicities.
• High level of organization and administrative skills to handle a high caseload.
• Clear and effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
• Willingness to work in-person in Harlem and surrounding offices.
• Willingness to work shifts around court holidays.

Responsabilités

• Provide support to the legal defense team with client-centered advocacy.
• Staff intake in court and assist with hearings.
• Maintain records and enter notes in the case management system.
• Prepare and serve legal papers and subpoenas.
• Catalogue and review discovery materials.
• Prepare trial binders and organize exhibits.
• Participate in investigations and witness interviews.
• Communicate with court staff and treatment providers.
• Attend in-person meetings and trainings, with at least two days per week on-site.
