The Wall Street Journal’s Growth Editor for Free Expression will lead the audience-growth strategy for a high-visibility Substack newsletter in the NYC office. You will shape distribution, partnerships, and creator-led franchises to expand reach while preserving editorial credibility.

You will work across editorial, product, marketing, analytics, and commercial teams to connect audience gains with potential subscription outcomes and new revenue models.

• Significant experience in growing newsletters and digital audiences.

Responsibilities

• Own the Free Expression growth strategy and set goals for audience acquisition.
• Test and optimize distribution strategies across channels to grow Substack readership.
• Collaborate with Opinion editors to sharpen themes and publishing rhythms.
• Identify and develop high-potential contributors and franchises.
• Track performance metrics and run experiments to improve engagement and retention.
• Coordinate with analytics, product, marketing, and finance on subscription outcomes.
