Classification Specification

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: GROUNDSKEEPER II

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

Pay: $18.80 per hour

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 6am- 2:30pm; some weekend work is required, as needed.

Note: The Groundskeeper II position includes mowing, weed eating, and trash pickup.

You will be placed on a 1-year probationary period starting your first day of hire.

Purpose of Classification

The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled landscaping work. The Groundskeeper is responsible for managing the grounds and facilities, and other activities related to public usage. Duties include assisting extension agents with demonstrations (turf, orchard, vineyard, gardens), grounds maintenance, operating equipment, and related tasks. Reports to the Ag Center Director.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this position. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if similar or related. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops and maintains public relations with extension agents, sponsors, community groups, and others.
  • Works independently and understands oral and written instructions.
  • Conducts inspections to ensure facilities and grounds are clean and undamaged after use.
  • Sets up arenas, barns, and grounds for events.
  • Maintains livestock areas.
  • Performs grounds checks, irrigation system maintenance, and bush hogging.
  • Performs general tasks such as mowing, trimming, litter pickup, installing hinges, spreading seed, painting, and cleaning.
  • Performs basic building maintenance like changing bulbs and restocking supplies.
  • Performs roadside and grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, trimming, debris removal, and heavy material handling.
  • Provides training and monitors work, troubleshooting as needed.
  • Operates machinery and tools, including backhoes, tractors, mowers, and power tools.
  • Inspects and maintains equipment, reports issues, and performs preventive maintenance.
  • Transports and loads equipment and materials.
  • Monitors inventory levels and requests supplies as needed.
  • Makes minor decisions following procedures.
  • Communicates with supervisors, staff, and the public to coordinate activities.
  • Performs carpentry and building projects as assigned.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug screening.

Additional Functions

Assists other employees or departments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED plus 3 years of experience in grounds maintenance, equipment operation, or equivalent training. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver’s license.

  • Physical Ability: Moderate effort, lifting up to 50 pounds, occasional heavier objects.
  • Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive colors, sounds, and signals; communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to dirt, dust, weather, noise, machinery, and hazards.
