Central Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1858, is a historic and iconic public space covering 843 acres. The Central Park Conservancy, founded in 1980, is a private organization dedicated to restoring and maintaining the Park, which now attracts over 40 million visitors annually.

The Conservancy is a major civic institution, overseeing landscape maintenance, capital improvements, and visitor experience, employing around 400 staff with an annual budget of $100 million.

Position Summary

The Groundskeeper in the Landscape Management Department maintains landscape areas, hardscapes, playgrounds, and architectural features within an assigned section, working under the supervision of the Foreperson.

Essential Job Functions include:

1. Technical Operation:
2. Providing landscape care and maintenance, including plant beds, hardscapes, playgrounds, and perimeter areas.
3. Performing mowing, trimming, irrigation, weeding, mulching, pruning, planting, snow removal, and other related duties.
4. Supporting waste management and maintaining athletic fields.
5. Assisting in special events and working with volunteers and interns.

Related Work:

1. Operating landscape maintenance equipment.
2. Maintaining tools and equipment.
3. Participating in training and reporting infrastructure or safety issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Experience in landscaping, park maintenance, turf maintenance, or horticulture.
3. Valid Driver’s License.

Additional Qualifications for Groundskeeper II:

1. 3+ years of landscape maintenance experience with increasing responsibility.
2. Proficiency in landscape maintenance tasks and plant identification.
3. Ability to work independently across seasons.
4. Internal candidates must demonstrate proficiency and satisfactory performance.
