Job summary

Montgomery College in Germantown seeks a Grounds Maintenance Worker Lead to supervise assigned staff and perform routine landscape maintenance. The role runs Monday–Friday, 6:00–2:30, and supports snow removal, grounds repairs, and event setup as needed.

Responsibilities include guiding crews, inspecting work, and maintaining plantings, lawns, and aquatic areas year-round. A valid MD Class C license is required; the college offers comprehensive benefits and a pathway for professional growth.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and any combination of education, training, and experience providing understanding of the trade and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
• Three years of hands-on experience in a lead position or as a crew foreman or front-line supervisor in commercial professional landscape or grounds maintenance, including knowledge and application of operation and maintenance of lawn equipment, planting and maintenance of plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
• Experience operating snow removal equipment such as tractors and trucks with blades.

Responsibilities

• Provide guidance and instruction to assigned staff.
• Receive and delegate work assignments as well as review/inspect the work of assigned staff.
• Perform routine grounds maintenance work such as graffiti and trash removal (recycled and bulk items), which may include bio-hazardous material.
• Maintain landscaped areas including mowing, edging, seeding, fertilizing, and pruning, along with leaf and debris removal.
• Clean parking lots and sidewalks of debris.
• Maintain and repair aquatic areas throughout the year.
• Remove dead animals from campus grounds.
• During inclement weather, remove snow and ice as mandated.
• Keep storm drains free of debris to prevent water build up.
• Perform maintenance and minor equipment repairs such as tune-ups, belt changes, tire repairs, tool sharpening, and adding or changing fluids.
• Operate vehicles and various types of tools and equipment.
• Process work orders and assist other skilled trades.
• Assist with special events such as the Annual Commencement.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity.
