Job description

Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance of the City's parks and landscapes. Work involves operating light machinery and using hand tools to prune trees, mow lawns, maintain park equipment and facilities; and policing public grounds. Employee must exercise some independent judgment and initiative in ensuring proper completion of assigned tasks. Reports to the Maintenance Coordinator.

Responsibilities include:

1. Performing landscaping duties such as mowing grass, trimming hedges and shrubbery, maintaining flower beds, trimming weeds, raking leaves, etc., using power lawn mowers, string trimmers, and various hand tools.
2. Performing general maintenance on weed eaters, including changing strings, heads, and blades.
3. Digging graves and backfilling for funerals and cremations.
4. Maintaining City parks, cutting grass, setting up for special events, and landscaping gateways of the City.
5. Maintaining lawn machinery by performing general maintenance such as gas, oil, and blade changes.
6. Policing public playgrounds, Downtown Business Overlay District, and other sites under Parks and Recreation, including debris removal.
7. Loading and unloading equipment and materials, and performing minor maintenance on equipment.
8. Dragging and lining athletic fields for recreational play.
9. Constructing and maintaining park facilities, including picnic shelters, signs, stages, playground equipment, and fences.
10. Performing some building maintenance and carpentry work.
11. Performing other related work as required.
12. Weekend work is required.

Qualifications include:

• Graduation from high school and 1 to 2 years of experience in labor-intensive maintenance work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Valid driver's license.

• Knowledge of basic landscaping and grounds maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
• Ability to operate landscaping equipment and hand tools safely.
• Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
