Job summary

Sonesta International Hotels in Minneapolis is seeking a friendly Host/Hostess to greet guests, escort to tables, and help prepare the restaurant for service. You will maintain knowledge of menu items and restaurant policies, ensure cleanliness, and support team with seating, wine lists, and station assignments.

This role requires good communication, basic math for cash handling, and flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Basic reading, writing and math skills.
  • Prior customer service and/or cash handling experience in hospitality preferred.
  • Alcohol awareness certification and/or food service permit may be required.
  • Ability to stand, lift up to 50 pounds, and work nights, weekends, or holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain complete knowledge of all menu items, specials, and restaurant items.
  • Know liquor regulations and prohibit service to minors or intoxicated persons.
  • Maintain knowledge of table numbers, set-ups, capacity, hours, price range and dress code.
  • Set up host station with supplies and maintain cleanliness.
  • Inspect restaurant environment and ensure standards; rectify deficiencies.
  • Inspect menus and wine lists; update as changes occur.
  • Place newspapers in designated areas for breakfast.
  • Prepare station chart and assign stations to staff.

What This Role Is All About

Courteously greet and escort guests to tables and assist in seating, ensuring hotel’s standards of service. Assist in preparing the restaurant for service and maintain the cleanliness of the room at all times.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Maintain complete knowledge of all menu items, special, and items of the restaurant
  • Maintain complete knowledge of and strictly abide by state liquor regulations, particularly those prohibiting service to minors, intoxicated persons and drunk driving
  • Maintain complete knowledge of table/ seat/ station numbers, proper table set-ups, room capacity, hours of operation, price range and dress code of the restaurant
  • Maintain complete knowledge of the correct use of equipment; use equipment only as intended. i.e. buffet equipment, etc.
  • Maintain complete knowledge and comply with all departmental policies and service procedures
  • Prepare station chart and assign stations to staff following departmental procedures
  • Set-up Host(ess) station with necessary supplies; always maintain cleanliness. Report shortages to Supervisor
  • Inspect the restaurant environment and entrance area, ensuring that all standards are met; rectify any deficiencies; always maintain cleanliness
  • Inspect condition and cleanliness of menus and wine lists; ensure designated amounts are available. Update menus and wine lists as changes occur
  • Place newspapers in designated areas for breakfast as specified in departmental procedures
Qualifications and Requirements:

Basic reading, writing and math skills. Prior customer service and/or cash handling experience in the hospitality industry preferred.

This job requires the ability to perform the following:
  • Carrying or lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Standing up and moving about the work area
  • Handling food, objects, products and utensils
  • Bending, stooping, kneeling
Other:
  • Communication skills utilize a significant amount of time when interacting with the guests and describing menu items, methods of preparation, etc.
  • Reading and writing abilities are utilized often when preparing meals from instructions or when monitoring inventory.
  • Mathematical skills, including basic math, percentages, quantities, and variances are used frequently.

Alcohol awareness certification and/or food service permit or valid health/food handler card as required by local or state government agency.

May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.

Anticipated Pay Range & Additional Job Information
  • Pay rate $19.60
