Job description

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is seeking a creative, hard-working graphic designer who can design for both digital and print mediums. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Creative Services, the ideal candidate will manage demanding, highly-visible, large-scale design projects, including citywide initiatives like Summer Streets, Vision Zero, Open Streets, Car-Free Earth Day, and more. The selected candidate should possess the ability to present creative concepts to the Executive Director and agency staff, work with stakeholders on development, and oversee successful execution. This includes recommending the best ways to visually communicate new safety and transportation improvement projects for the public across NYC DOT channels (print, web, social media).

Responsibilities include maintaining existing NYC DOT brand and Vision Zero style guides; designing logos, icons, illustrations, postcards, flyers, posters, invitations, ads, brochures, banners, signage, diagrams, and reports for print, websites, mobile apps, and social media platforms; creating animations and motion graphics for digital campaigns; developing layouts, UI components, and interactive elements aligned with brand guidelines; collaborating with developers to ensure designs translate into effective UX web and app experiences; designing marketing materials such as banners, email templates, and digital ads; optimizing designs for various screen sizes; and staying updated on design trends, animation techniques, and emerging technologies.

Minimum Qualifications include:

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with two years of experience in community work or related activities; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent with six years of relevant experience; or
  • Equivalent education and experience, with at least one year of experience as described above.

Preferred Skills include a BFA in graphic design or related field with 5 years of professional experience, a strong portfolio, extensive knowledge of graphic design, typography, color theory, digital printing, and Fiery output; proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Extensis Connect/Portfolio; experience with motion graphics, animations, video editing; ability to design for social media; and knowledge of HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript (preferred but not mandatory).

Additional information covers Public Service Loan Forgiveness, residency requirements, and the city's commitment to diversity and equal opportunity.
