Job summary

Arup is seeking a Graduate Tunneling Engineer in San Francisco to join the Early Careers program. You will carry out empirical, analytical, and numerical analyses for tunnel design, interpret results, classify ground conditions, and communicate designs with sketches and instrumentation plans.

You will use Plaxis, FLAC, RocScience, UDEC, and other tools, while collaborating in multidisciplinary teams on major infrastructure projects.

Qualifications

• Masters or PhD in Underground Construction/Tunneling or Geotechnical/Civil/Mining Engineering.
• Sound knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals, soil and rock mechanics.
• Proficient in developing code and common coding languages.
• Proficient in geotechnical engineering analysis software preferred.

Responsibilities

• Carry out empirical, analytical, and numerical analyses for tunnel and shaft design.
• Interpret and organize design results into project documentation.
• Characterize and classify ground conditions for tunneling methods.
• Communicate design work through sketches and instrumentation planning.
• Use tunnel design software such as Plaxis, FLAC, UDEC, RocScience, or FracMan.
• Undertake geological mapping and rock mass classification on site.
• Apply rock and soil mechanics to assess failure modes and ground support.
• Perform linear and non-linear analysis of tunnel linings using SAP or GSA.
• Develop workflows and automation for standard processes.
• Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams on large infrastructure projects.
