Job summary

The Port of Seattle ICT Department is offering two part-time, school-year ML Intern positions lasting up to five months. You'll gain hands-on experience by supporting ML/AI prototypes for Aviation and Maritime divisions, under an assigned mentor and with experienced engineers.

You will help define problems, build datasets, train and evaluate models, and contribute to deployment and end-user feedback, using Python and modern ML frameworks.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a Master's degree program or a recent graduate (<1 year) in CS/CS&E, Statistics/Data Science, ECE, Physics, Mathematics or OR/Industrial Engineering.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ML/DL concepts and their applications.
  • Ability to gather requirements, understand data sources, and develop training datasets.

Role

There are two positions available for this role. This is a part-time school-year internship opportunity expected to last up to five months. As a Machine Learning Intern within the Port of Seattle ICT Department, you’ll gain hands‑on experience at one of the largest ports on the West Coast, supporting ML and AI‑related prototypes and pilot projects for various operating divisions, including Aviation (SEA Airport), and Maritime (Fishermen's Terminal, Marinas, Cruise Ship Terminals) divisions. You’ll work closely with an assigned mentor and collaborate with experienced engineers, assisting with the development of ML and AI prototypes that involve problem definition, model and dataset development, model training and evaluation, concluding with deployment and end‑user feedback. The work and initiatives you will be a part of may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Communicate effectively in verbal or written form with users

Who you are:
  • A student – You must be currently enrolled in a Master's degree or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) in a Master’s degree program in Computer Science, CS & Engineering (CS/CSE), Statistics/Data Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Physics, Mathematics, or Operations Research (OR) / Industrial Engineering.

  • Technology – You have experience in using some or all of the following: Python, Keras, PyTorch, TensorFlow, R, SQL, NoSQL, C/C++, Go, CUDA
  • Knowledgeable – You understand Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques and their application to Generative AI, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, Translation, and other related domains.
  • Communication – You can effectively communicate with users to gather and understand their requirements and translate them into actionable steps.
  • Analysis – You are able to identify data sources, analyze the available data, devise and deploy the means for collecting and cleansing the data, create training datasets, and create and test the models that provide predictive analysis to live operational data
What else you need to know:
  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be scheduled between Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (20 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.
  • Work Environment – This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.
  • Limited Duration – This is a limited duration position and is expected to last no longer than five months.
  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you will/must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington State within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
