Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Department of Informatics and Engineering Systems seeks a graduate assistant to support the continued development and organization of USC Upstate’s Industrial Engineering program and its Lab-in-Industry (LI²) model. LI² embeds selected Industrial Engineering laboratory experiences within local manufacturing facilities rather than on campus. Students visit companies to observe real production systems, interact with engineers and frontline employees, and complete structured activities related to their classes. The program is designed to connect classroom concepts to current industrial practice while building partnerships between the university and local employers.

The position will focus on maintaining organized records of current and potential industry partners, documenting prior site visits, and developing materials and lesson plan documents that help faculty and partner companies plan future Lab-in-Industry experiences. Responsibilities include reviewing and updating company and contact information; organizing records of previous visits; using faculty notes and student post-visit reflections to create clear lesson plans and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for individual laboratories; developing example materials that can be shared with new or returning partner companies; and helping maintain contact with these companies. The graduate assistant will also help document site visits for posting as social media content. Assignments involve documentation, communication, lesson-plan development, and program promotion. This is a mentored experience in program coordination, industry relations, technical communication, educational documentation, and academic program development.

Qualifications

Applicants should have strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills and an interest in program coordination, industry relations, technical communication, marketing, engineering education, or academic program development. Experience with one or more of the following is preferred but not required: Excel or another spreadsheet platform, contact management and communication, document organization, lesson-plan development, social media content, graphic design, or marketing communications. The successful candidate must be able to maintain accurate records, communicate professionally with faculty and external partners, learn new tools, work independently, regularly communicate progress, and handle institutional or partner information responsibly.
