Grading Superintendent – Heavy Civil Construction

Evergreen, Colorado | Full-Time

Lead the Work. Build the Future.

Since 1944, ESCO has been building the infrastructure that supports communities across Colorado and the surrounding states. As a 100% employee‑owned company, we believe the people leading the work should share in the success they help create.

From major earthwork and site development to utilities, concrete flatwork, and concrete structures, ESCO takes on challenging heavy civil projects that require strong leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to doing the job right.

We’re seeking an experienced Grading Superintendent to lead field operations, manage crews, coordinate daily production, and help deliver high‑quality projects safely, efficiently, and profitably.

If you’re a hands‑on leader with strong grading experience, a deep understanding of heavy civil construction, and the ability to build strong crews and relationships, ESCO offers the opportunity to grow your career as an employee‑owner.

What You’ll Do

As a Grading Superintendent, you’ll manage day‑to‑day field operations and provide leadership for grading and earthwork activities on heavy civil construction projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead daily site operations, including overlot grading, over‑excavation, subgrade preparation, aggregate placement, structure excavation and backfill, and fine grading.
  • Manage and coordinate crews, equipment, subcontractors, and daily production activities.
  • Establish daily priorities, assign work, and allocate resources to maintain project schedules.
  • Review construction documents for completeness, constructability, and field execution.
  • Understand and apply contract documents, plans, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Identify and resolve constructability issues as they arise.
  • Coordinate timely quality control inspections and official inspections.
  • Ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with ESCO and customer policies and procedures.
  • Accurately record and track time, quantities, production, and daily progress.
  • Support change order identification, documentation, and management.
  • Work with Project Controls and project teams to develop schedules and logical activity sequencing.
  • Maximize crew efficiency through effective planning, communication, and scheduling.
  • Maintain positive relationships with owners, clients, project managers, employees, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Investigate and resolve field issues, work disputes, and project challenges.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and manage field operations employees assigned to the site.
  • Provide leadership that supports crew development, accountability, safety, quality, and performance.
Required Qualifications

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience as a Grading Superintendent or similar field leadership role in heavy civil construction.
  • Strong knowledge of grading, earthwork, excavation, subgrade preparation, aggregate placement, and fine grading.
  • Experience managing crews, equipment, subcontractors, schedules, and daily field production.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, sequencing, and safety practices.
  • Ability to track daily quantities, labor, equipment, and production.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Organized, detail‑oriented, motivated, and accountable.
  • Ability to access all areas of active construction sites in varying climates and environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Topcon and/or Trimble GPS systems.
  • Experience supporting project schedules, change orders, and production forecasting.
  • Background managing multiple crews or subcontractors on complex grading projects.
  • Strong understanding of quality control inspections and field documentation.
