Job summary

LHH is seeking a Payroll Accountant to support a complex domestic and international payroll environment. This role requires an accounting mindset to review payroll data, spot discrepancies, and communicate with partners across regions.

Based in Chicago with a hybrid schedule, you will handle journals, reconciliations, reporting, and collaboration with HR, treasury, and payroll providers, offering growth into broader accounting or FP&A.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field.
• 3–5 years of payroll or related accounting experience.
• Experience with multi-currency payroll and journal entries.
• Ability to review payroll data, detect discrepancies, and communicate with partners.
• Strong analytical judgment and attention to detail.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work with international teams.

Responsibilities

• Support accurate domestic and international payroll processing
• Review payroll inputs, employee changes, timecard information, deductions, terminations, and other payroll data
• Analyze payroll reports for accuracy, completeness, and period-over-period consistency
• Identify unexpected fluctuations, patterns, and discrepancies across payrolls and currencies
• Prepare payroll-related journal entries
• Reconcile payroll registers to the general ledger
• Reconcile payroll, benefits, insurance, paid-time-off, retirement, and related liability accounts
• Coordinate with outside payroll providers and international accounting, tax, and compliance partners
• Support statutory payments and recurring payroll obligations
• Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end payroll reports
• Maintain complete payroll records, approvals, reconciliations, and supporting documentation
• Administer deductions, tax codes, garnishments, retirement-plan deductions, and time-off accruals
• Respond to employee payroll questions professionally and discreetly
• Support external audits, compliance reviews, government inquiries, and year-end reporting
• Partner with HR, accounting, treasury, payroll providers, and other internal stakeholders
• Improve payroll controls, documentation, reporting, and recurring processes
