Afton Chemical Corporation in Richmond, Virginia, is seeking an R&D Manager for Heavy Duty Engine Oil (HDEO) to provide technical leadership of the global HDEO R&D team and execute the overall R&D strategy.

Responsibilities include planning and managing a global team, budgets, projects, and test resources, ensuring ISO documentation and safety programs, and translating marketing plans into actionable NPD and research plans. A background in chemical R&D with leadership is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or Mechanical/Chemical Engineering.
• 10+ years of relevant R&D leadership experience.
• MBA or advanced degree preferred.
• Experience supervising chemists and engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Heavy-Duty Engine Oil (HDEO) R&D team to develop enabling chemistry, new products, and performance testing.
• Build future, in-depth understanding in the HDEO space; initiate new projects and align with NPD plans.
• Supervise team activities, conduct performance appraisals, training needs, recruitment, and issue resolution.
• Liaise with Technology Development Team; provide technical leadership and ensure APDP adherence.
• Translate marketing plans into actionable NPD and research plans.
• Develop and monitor a comprehensive safety program; document activities, meetings, inspections, training, JSA, corrective actions.
• Maintain ISO documentation; participate in ISO/Quality activities.
• Prepare reports and presentations on lab results and development progress.
• Coordinate cross-functional communication between Business, Strategy, Marketing, CTS, Process Development, and Senior Management.
• Manage IP activities including analysis and freedom-to-operate assessments.
• Represent Afton in industry committees/conferences and manage the R&D budget and scheduling.
