Job summary

The German Summer Language School at Middlebury College in Vermont is hiring a full-time stage designer/set builder to support two summer productions (July 1–Aug 15, 2020). The role requires close collaboration with directors and technical staff, and on-site construction for one production.

In addition to salary, lodging and a complete meal plan are provided. Access to campus facilities and daily life in the German School are included, with full participation and adherence to the German Language

Qualifications

• native or near-native German speaker.
• working proficiency in English.
• at least two productions as lead designer/ builder (please provide portfolio).
• ability to work under high pressure and respond to short-notice changes.
• ideally: experience with theater in an educational context.

Responsibilities

• Design and build stage elements for two productions, collaborating with directors and technical staff.
• Create on-site, movable designs suitable for summer performances.
• Support the German Summer Language School's co-curricular opera and plays and coordinate with production teams.

Description

The German Summer Language School at Middlebury College in Vermont(USA) is hiring for a full-time stage designer/ set builder tosupport the School's co-curricular German language opera and Germanplay (two productions) in summer 2020 (July 1st - August 15th2020). Since budgets for these productions are very small, we arelooking for somebody who can create basic (movable) but efficientdesigns, in close collaboration with the productions' directors andtechnical staff, and who will be able to build one of them on site.Production titles will be announced in spring.

The German Summer Language School is a total immersion Germansummer language academy, welcoming university students and adultlearners to our Vermont campus for seven weeks each summer. Foundedin 1915, it is the longest-running summer language program in thecountry, and it has been designated an AATG Center of Excellence in2013. Students learn under Middlebury's trademark Language Pledge(=they are not allowed to use any other language than German forthe duration of the program), and all employees of the School arerequired to adhere to this Pledge when with students.

In addition to the salary, lodging and a complete meal plan will beprovided.

Access to all of the College's sports and cultural facilities andactivities (sports complex, concerts, museum etc.).

Full participation in the German School's daily life, and Insuranceis available.
