Job summary

Middlebury College's German Summer Language School in Vermont seeks a full-time stage designer/set builder to create and install basic, movable designs for two productions this summer (July 1–August 15, 2020).

Work closely with directors and technical staff; responsibilities include on-site building of one set and rapid adaptation to changes, with lodging, meals, and campus access provided. Insurance and facilities access are included.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native German language required.
• Working proficiency in English.
• At least two productions as lead designer/builder; portfolio required.
• Ability to work under high pressure and respond to short-notice changes.
• Ideally experience with theater in an educational context.

Responsibilities

• Design and build basic, movable set designs for two summer productions.
• Collaborate closely with directors and technical staff throughout the process.
• Build one set on site and support transitions during tech rehearsals.
• Participate in on-campus life and adhere to the School's program guidelines.

Description

The German Summer Language School at Middlebury College in Vermont (USA) is hiring for a full-time stage designer/ set builder to support the School's co-curricular German language opera and German play (two productions) in summer 2020 (July 1st - August 15th 2020). Since budgets for these productions are very small, we are looking for somebody who can create basic (movable) but efficient designs, in close collaboration with the productions' directors and technical staff, and who will be able to build one of them on site. Production titles will be announced in spring.

The German Summer Language School is a total immersion German summer language academy, welcoming university students and adult learners to our Vermont campus for seven weeks each summer. Founded in 1915, it is the longest-running summer language program in the country, and it has been designated an AATG Center of Excellence in 2013. Students learn under Middlebury's trademark Language Pledge (=they are not allowed to use any other language than German for the duration of the program), and all employees of the School are required to adhere to this Pledge when with students.

In addition to the salary, lodging and a complete meal plan will be provided.

Access to all of the College's sports and cultural facilities and activities (sports complex, concerts, museum etc.)

Full participation in the German School's daily life, and Insurance is available.
