Job Title: Laborer
Department: Construction
Reports To: Construction Manager
Employment Status: Hourly (Non-exempt)
Primary Location: Galena, IL

We will determine salary based on skills and experience in relation to the function of the role, as well as equity to any other employees in the same or similar role.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a Telecommunications General Laborer to join our growing team. The Laborer works on the construction site and is responsible for cleaning the site to prepare it, removing hazards, loading and unloading materials, and operating and using various tools and equipment to complete assigned tasks. They are also responsible for placing conduit and/or cables in trenches, splicing conduit sections (install couplers), placing anchors, pedestals, vaults, and more. The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge of the telecommunications industry, but on-the-job training is provided.

Job Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):

1. Assist in loading and unloading all equipment, materials, and supplies needed for daily work
2. Safely inspect, operate, and maintain tampers, jackhammers, core drills, concrete saws, and other miscellaneous equipment
3. Hand dig with shovels, picks, and digging bars to expose located utilities, access underground vaults and pedestals, and complete trenches
4. Place conduit and/or cables in trenches, splice conduit sections (install couplers), place anchors, pedestals, vaults, etc. to complete construction tasks
5. Fully restore worksite at completion of work: refill trenches and holes, tamp soil, replant plants or shrubs, place temporary asphalt on streets
6. Attend and participate in morning and afternoon job-specific safety/huddle meetings as needed
7. Assist with rigging and setting of structures
8. Maintain safety of company vehicles and ensure optimal utilization
9. Ensure compliance to customer requirements and completed activities
10. Observe and promote safety compliance
11. Complete required safety training annually
12. Report injuries and other accidents to the Construction Manager
13. Assist coworkers in ensuring the site is clean and organized at the end of each shift
14. Travel overnight to various sites as requested
15. Other duties as assigned

Required Skills & Qualifications:

1. High school or equivalent education
2. Valid Driver’s license (unrestricted) and acceptable driving record
3. Reliable transportation to various jobsites
4. Subject to pre-employment background check, drug test, and MVR
5. Ability to follow instructions
6. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with crew, leadership, and clients
7. Strong understanding of safety procedures and policies
8. Must be able to meet physical demands of the position; ability to lift up to 75 pounds
9. Excellent vision or the use of prescription lenses
10. Exceptional manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
11. Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time in all weather conditions

Desired Skills and Qualifications (but not necessary):

1. Previous experience and knowledge of underground utility construction
2. Experience in operating small equipment and hand tools

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

1. Must be able and willing to work outdoors and in inclement weather conditions
2. Must be able to lift and carry materials of all shapes and sizes, weighing 40 to 90 pounds
3. Must be able to maintain visual and audible contact with other crew members and all moving or stationary persons/vehicles/objects to ensure safe coordination of movement
4. Must be able to safely operate company vehicles or work around heavy equipment and machinery
5. Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time
6. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl while performing work
7. Must be able to ascend and descend ladders
8. Must be able to work in small/confined areas
9. Must be able to work while wearing safety boots, safety glasses, hardhat, and any applicable safety gear
