Summary:
A Yard General Laborer is responsible for assisting in the collection, sorting, processing, and preparation of scrap metal and recycling.
Duties and Responsibilities:
All are considered essential functions of this role.
- Sorting:
- Sort and categorize different types of scrap metal, such as steel, aluminum, copper, and brass.
- Separating metals by type is essential for recycling efficiency.
- Cleaning:
- Remove contaminants like dirt, plastic, or non-metallic materials from scrap metal.
- May use tools like wire brushes or magnets.
- Cutting and Shearing:
- Use cutting and shearing equipment to reduce large pieces of metal into smaller, more manageable sizes.
- Baling:
- Operate machinery to compress and bale scrap metal into compact bundles for easier transportation and storage.
- Loading and Unloading:
- Load scrap metal onto trucks for transportation to recycling facilities or unload incoming scrap metal deliveries.
- Safety:
- Adhere to strict safety protocols to ensure personal safety and the safety of others in the workplace.
- Wear appropriate safety gear and follow safety procedures when handling heavy machinery.
- Maintenance:
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning of equipment to ensure it functions correctly and safely.
- Record Keeping:
- Maintain records of the types and quantities of scrap metal collected and processed.
- Environmental Compliance:
- Follow environmental regulations and guidelines for recycling and disposing of hazardous materials properly.
- Teamwork:
- Collaborate with other workers to efficiently complete tasks and meet production goals.
- Customer Service:
- Provide excellent customer service when dealing with individuals or businesses selling scrap metal.
- Quality Control:
- Ensure that scrap metal meets quality standards and is free from contaminants that could affect the recycling process.
- Continuous Learning:
- Stay updated on industry trends and best practices to improve efficiency and safety in the workplace.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Work may be performed in various weather conditions and may involve exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental factors.
Physical Demands:
- Physical strength and stamina, like lifting heavy objects and working in various weather conditions can be demanding.
Expected Hours of Work:
- Normal office hours - approximately 7a-5p.
- Irregular hours and overtime may be required, especially during peak construction seasons.
Travel:
- Local - if needed. Occasional training in surrounding areas or out of state.
Education and Other Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience in metal scrap cutting, recycling, or a related field is beneficial but not always required.
- Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations related to scrap yard operations.
- Proficiency in adhering to safety guidelines and protocols.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to changing procedures and technologies.
