Job summary

Morton Salt is seeking a General Laborer to perform a variety of manual tasks on varying shifts inside and outside the facility. The role requires lifting up to 50 pounds, working in different temperatures, and learning to operate mobile equipment as assigned.

Under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, responsibilities include janitorial tasks, loading/unloading materials, and assisting mechanics. Overtime and weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • 1 year of manufacturing experience, preferred.
  • Capable of inspecting work area for safety hazards.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep, vacuum, mop floors; clean walls and equipment.
  • Assist in loading/unloading supplies and materials.
  • Shovel salt, mix concrete, operate basic power tools.
  • Support mechanics and perform minor maintenance.
  • Maintain clean, orderly work areas across departments.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the General Laborer performs a variety of manual tasks on varying shifts as required, inside and outside of the facility and in all departments. This position frequently demands considerable manual exertion.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Typical tasks are janitorial related, which include sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, dusting, cleaning walls, ceilings, sinks, toilets, etc.
  • Perform a variety of basic level work including:
  • Loading and unloading supplies, materials, trimmings, package materials and equipment, etc., throughout the facility, on varying shifts as required.
  • Shoveling salt.
  • Rough cutting of lumber and pipe.
  • Mixing of concrete or digging trenches.
  • Occasional operation of power tools.
  • Washing tanks and silos.
  • Handling trash.
  • Assist in loading products or dumping hoppers.
  • Acting as truck helper.
  • Lifting heavy loads or positioning equipment.
  • Assisting mechanics.
  • Cleaning yard and work areas.
  • Will frequently be assigned to other departments throughout the facility as required.
  • Will learn to operate mobile equipment as assigned.
  • Keeps working area, tools and equipment clean, neat and orderly.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices throughout the department and plant.
  • Perform other work of related nature within job classification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • High degree of attention required to prevent injury to self and coworkers; promote safe workplace.
  • Must be able to work safely in varying temperatures in the workplace year-round.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Must be able to wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, and any other required PPE items.
  • Must be able to work overtime as necessary, including weekends.
  • Must be able to work at heights as needed.
  • Must be able to work different shifts as needed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • 1 year of manufacturing experience, preferred.
  • Capable of inspecting work area for safety hazards and mitigation as necessary.
  • Cleans salt spillage under conveyor belts, along walkways, or near equipment; cleaning requires the employee to use a shovel to remove salt – this would call for the employee to climb ladders, bend, twist and lift the loaded shovel.
  • Operate the forklift or front-end loader. Must have good eye-hand coordination to properly manipulate the respective hand controls; requires the employee to fill the equipment, and pump oil, fuel, or compressed air into production equipment – this requires reaching, twisting, bending, and lifting.
  • Assist mechanics in major repairs and perform minor maintenance, for this reason employees must be adept at using hand tools.
  • Must be able to work productively in a group environment or independently.
  • Must be able to work additional hours as required.
  • Works in seated or standing positions for prolonged periods of time.
  • May perform sustained manual activities at moderate levels of exertion including lifting and moving loads of up to fifty (50) pounds, climbing ladders / stairs and working on elevated platforms.
  • Works and travels throughout surface plant environment of varied temperatures and humidity.
  • Must be capable of wearing all required PPE and must be physically able to access all plant work areas.
  • Uses full range of motion.
  • Works in general office and surface manufacturing plant environment.

Compensation is $21.22 per hour.
