Job summary

Morton Salt is seeking an operator to bag salt, drive a forklift, and support production on-site. The role includes basic housekeeping, documentation, and following safety and quality policies.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Working in a noisy, dusty industrial setting with varying temperatures.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the operator is responsible for bagging salt, driving the forklift, performing basic housekeeping, and performing other tasks as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Processing and/or Packaging food grade and water conditioning salt.
  • Work safely and responsibly, following all safety policies and procedures.
  • Communicate all safety, quality, productivity, and work environment concerns to the supervisor.
  • Operate machinery and equipment such as forklifts and work at a sufficient rate to support production demand.
  • Palletize finished salt bags on pallets before shipment with up to 50lb bags.
  • Label and scan into inventory finished product pallets.
  • Print shipment labels, identify the product, and apply it to proper pallets.
  • Monitors stretch wrapping equipment, replenishes empty stretch wrap rolls, and manually stretches wrap pallets when needed.
  • Keep stock of empty bags replenished for the bag filler.
  • Verify the code date on the product.
  • Inspect the finished product for any foreign material before entering the filler.
  • Visually inspect bags and pallets for damage and/or foreign material.
  • Responsible for ensuring the product is being filled into the correct packaging.
  • May be responsible for checking or verifying correct fill weight.
  • Complete packaging paperwork and keep accurate records of production data.
  • Aid and assist the technicians and supervisors.
  • Ensure the area of responsibility is kept clean in accordance with the housekeeping and GMP policy.
  • Perform work according to accepted procedures and practices.
  • It may require lengths of time in an outdoor working environment.
  • Assisting with basic repairs/maintenance as required and maintaining a work area clear of hazards, including sweeping and maintaining machines and equipment through regular daily housekeeping.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably assigned.
  • Understand the importance of product safety, legality, authenticity, and quality – informs the Quality Department and/or the Leadership Team of any issues prioritizing food safety issues.
  • Understand and comply with all Quality, Environmental Health, and Safety (QEHS) policies, especially those pertinent to the facility’s Safety and HACCP program and how they apply to the tasks performed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • This position requires knowledge and awareness of industrial sites. Must be able to work overtime as necessary.
  • Able to pull, push, carry, and lift 50lb.
  • Must be able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (hard hat, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hi-visibility apparel, gloves, etc.) and additional arc-rated apparel as needed.
  • Works with varying ranges in temperature and humidity. The environment has a fair amount of noise and dust.
  • Some work must be done around moving machinery and equipment and around energized power cables.
  • Regularly required to stand, reach, and move about the facility.
