Job summary

Nelnet is seeking a Data Engineer to own the data foundation for GenAI solutions for higher education and SLED clients. You will build and maintain data pipelines on Google Cloud, ensure data is classified, access-controlled, and ready for AI use, and surface compliance risks before production.

Join the GenAI delivery team, translate requirements into production data flows, and collaborate with GCP/Gemini Engineers to ensure data quality, structure, and governance across engagements.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience building data pipelines and ELT/ETL for analytics or GenAI on a major cloud platform.
• Experience with data governance and classification tools (Dataplex, DLP) and sensitivity handling.
• Strong SQL and Python for pipeline development and data transformation.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain data pipelines using BigQuery and Dataflow to ingest and serve client data for GenAI use cases.
• Classify and tag data with Dataplex and DLP to identify sensitive data before AI use.
• Partner with engineering teams to ensure data structures meet AI and compliance needs.
