POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead GED Instructor & Adult Education Facilitator owns the day-to-day delivery, structure, and results of the Ujamaa Place GED program. This full-time educator provides on-site instruction at least four days per week, builds individualized learning plans based on each participant’s starting level, and holds participants to consistent standards of attendance, effort, and progress. The Lead Instructor also supports related educational goals, including Driver's License test preparation and college enrollment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
GED Instruction & Program Leadership
  • Teach and facilitate GED preparation sessions a minimum of four days per week across all four subject areas: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.
  • Deliver instruction using the established GED curriculum (currently Kaplan GED Test Curriculum), supplemented with additional resources and technology as needed to accelerate learning.
  • Design and maintain a consistent weekly program schedule, including whole-group instruction, small-group work, independent practice, and one-on-one tutoring.
  • Establish and uphold clear program expectations for attendance, punctuality, participation, and professionalism, creating a culture where the GED is treated as a priority, not an option.
  • Teach and facilitate Driver's License test education and support participants pursuing college enrollment.
Assessment & Individualized Learning
  • Assess each participant at intake to identify academic starting levels and build an individualized learning plan with a target completion timeline (10 to 20 weeks).
  • Provide individual tutoring that addresses specific educational needs; modify lessons and practice tests to ensure comprehensive learning and proficiency.
  • Use official practice tests (e.g., GED Ready) to determine test readiness, and coordinate scheduling, registration, and support for official GED testing.
  • Create and maintain an educational log for each participant that documents progress on specific lessons, practice-test results, and passed subject tests.
Accountability, Attendance & Engagement
  • Maintain daily attendance records and routinely reach out to participants to ensure consistent attendance in classroom and tutoring sessions.
  • Maintain a professional, communicative coaching relationship with participants, providing regular feedback, encouragement, and accountability.
  • Identify participants at risk of disengaging and take early action to re-engage them; determine, with the Director, whether continued services are appropriate.
  • Communicate with participants' Ujamaa Place coaches when attendance, engagement, or outside barriers affect a participant’s progress.
  • Recognize and celebrate milestones (subject tests passed, attendance streaks, GED completion) to build momentum and a winning culture.
Data, Reporting & Program Improvement
  • Enter all required data accurately and on time in the client database, including attendance, progress notes, assessments, and outcomes.
  • Track and report program outcomes (enrollment, attendance, subject tests passed, time to completion, and GED attainment) to the Director of Education & Career Pathways.
  • Assist in the evaluation of program outcomes and contribute to the continuous improvement of educational services.
  • Manage academic resources, assist with scheduling, and perform administrative tasks that support program objectives.
Collaboration & Volunteer Support
  • Collaborate with team members and community education organizations (including Adult Basic Education providers and testing centers) to enhance program content and delivery.
  • Develop and implement an orientation program for volunteer tutors, and monitor tutor schedules and records.
  • Help connect GED graduates to next steps, including career pathways, vocational training, and post-secondary enrollment.
