Job description

Introduction

These seasonal Program Aide positions will directly support the City of New Haven’s Parks Department and its peak season operations. The work will require evening and weekend hours, and will be under the direct supervision of Parks Dept. Full-Time Parks Administrative staff, Parks Maintenance staff, as well as Senior Seasonal staff and under the programmatic supervision of the Parks Dept. These employees shall be responsible for working with Park staff as assigned in the following areas:

SEASONAL PROGRAM AIDE, PARK GATE ATTENDANTS:
  1. To manage the daily front gate operations at Lighthouse Point Park, providing excellent customer service and processing vehicle and vessel passes and permits.
  2. To monitor daily picnic permit schedules at Lighthouse Point Park and other parks as assigned and communicate any issues that may arise to the Parks Dept.
SEASONAL PROGRAM AIDE, PARK RESTROOM ATTENDANTS:

This role includes various assignments to maintain Lighthouse Point Park gate checkpoint facilities, maintain park restrooms and bathhouses and public gathering areas and other parks as assigned, and seasonal operational areas and outdoor park settings. Seasonal position, up to 40 hours per week, not to exceed 120 calendar days. Hours of operation for Lighthouse Park are typically sunrise to sunset. As such, hours of work will vary, and shifts will include early mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Gate & Facilities Attendants arrive on time to support Lighthouse Point Park Gate and Lighthouse Parks Dept. Facility Seasonal operations, providing excellent customer service for all visitors to the park.
  2. Gate Attendants process payment for all day passes and/or vehicle/vessel stickers and guiding access to the park, as well as monitoring all picnic areas and splash pad areas as directed by Supervisors.
  3. Gate Attendants help set up all equipment and materials needed for the Lighthouse Point Park Gate operations program.
  4. Gate Attendants assist with daily tasks such as monitoring the Lighthouse front gate, review of vehicle registrations, attendance and visitor tracking, record and schedule keeping, and all other necessary front gate functions.
  5. Facility Attendants are tasked to ensure along with full-time and other seasonal staff the cleaning and sanitization of park restroom facilities and public picnic areas as directed and in designated areas.
  6. Assists in supervision of and participates in the program team for Parks Dept. activities throughout the season.
  7. Communicates well with all park visitors and program staff.
  8. Assists with maintaining access, cleanliness, and orderliness of all park areas and equipment.
  9. Represents the department at citywide and community events, meetings, and facilities.
  10. Follows safety guidelines and protocols established by the department.
  11. Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Recent high school graduate, experience in customer service, maintenance-related work including custodial/janitorial cleaning service work, municipal parks work which provided the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Previous experience working with the public, comfortable with working in a fast-paced environment.
  2. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  3. A working knowledge of parks and outdoor permitted activities.
  4. Ability to work well in a team environment with shared goals.
  5. Ability to work independently.
  6. Ability to use basic tools and follow instructions.
  7. Ability to support in delivery of programs for park visitors.
  8. Ability to work with diverse groups interested in parks.
  9. Ability to accurately enter records and information as part of Program Aide Department programs.
  10. Effective planning, prioritization, and organizational skills with ability to execute multiple tasks.
  11. Must be able to work flexible hours, as programming shall include evening and weekend schedules.
  12. Bilingual (Spanish preferred) desired but not required.
  13. A valid driver’s license preferred but not required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work in various conditions, including inclement weather such as rain, and a variety of temperatures. Agility and physical fitness to be mobile and stand for extended periods of time.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This 'Non Tested' position may be General or Special Funds. This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment. Persons may not be employed in two concurrent positions with the City and/or the Board of Education at the same time. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City’s Drug Free Workplace Policy.
