Job description

Job Summary

Operability in jet engine engineering is a cross‑functional discipline focused on ensuring a gas turbine engine operates safely, stably, and reliably across its entire intended flight envelope, from sub‑idle to maximum power and across various environmental conditions. It integrates performance, compressor aerodynamics, aircraft inlet design, engine control systems and more, ensuring that high‑performance designs do not suffer from instabilities such as compressor stall/surge, combustor blowout, or over‑temperature conditions. This level of design and analysis guarantees that the pilot has unrestricted throttle operation to accomplish their mission.

This posting is expected to close on 14 September 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and run engine tests; develop engine test plans that verify safe operating limits.
  • Define and assist in conducting equipment and system tests.
  • Identify optimal testing strategies and report performance per industry standards.
  • Monitor component and system tests to ensure test vehicle safety.
  • Analyze engine operability and performance.
  • Analyze inlet distortion and design hardware to simulate its impact on engine operation.
  • Use thermodynamic modeling tools to analyze engine performance data and make recommendations.
  • Improve gas turbine thermodynamic and operability modeling techniques.
  • Work with other engineering disciplines to assess gas turbine engine operability.
  • Analyze data using operability tools while protecting the company’s intellectual property.
  • Drive technical solutions and continuous improvement.
  • Execute analyses and evaluations to meet business standards and product/program requirements.
  • Engage in research, design, development, and enhancement of technologies to improve performance, operability, and cost.
  • Provide engineering support for performance, cost‑reduction and quality initiatives.
  • Lead efforts to resolve field and manufacturing process issues.
  • Collaborate across teams and with customers.
  • Coordinate with cross‑functional teams, including aerodynamics, performance, systems, and controls.
  • Develop strong relationships with external customers and partners.
  • Drive unit‑ and system‑level functional performance to deliver customer‑focused solutions.
  • Provide leadership, documentation, and communication.
  • Document technical data and results in accordance with engineering policies and procedures.
  • Communicate significant technical issues, risks or developments in a timely manner.
  • Participate in organizational initiatives and technical/program reviews.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to project team members.
  • Support technical program managers and mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Make decisions within a defined framework and engage senior team members on complex issues.
  • Contribute independently to projects while supporting senior engineers in advancing engine operability technologies.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience related to aircraft engine operability or related discipline.
  • GE Aerospace will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
Desired Characteristics
  • Enthusiasm for propulsion and aero/thermodynamic disciplines.
  • Experience in aircraft engine testing, cycle performance, or component aero design.
  • Proficiency with NPSS, Python, or similar simulation/programming tools.
  • Experience in gas turbine engine test support, analysis, and thermodynamic modeling.
  • Experience in engine qualification and certification.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a structured team environment and also independently.
  • Process‑oriented mindset with strong problem analysis, resolution skills, and systems thinking.
  • Strong analytical skills in thermodynamics and aerodynamics.
  • Experience documenting, planning, and executing technical programs; established project management skills.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring less experienced operability engineers.
Compensation

The base pay range for this position is $130,000–$175,000 per year. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set.
