Purpose of JobPerforms skilled work involving construction, repair, and maintenance of the gas distribution system under general supervision.
Essential Job Duties- Operates a variety of equipment including trenchers, jack hammers, and boring machines for the purpose of installing gas distribution mains and service lines.
- Performs plastic pipe fusing, installs taps, valves and other related components of system.
- Performs key valve inspections, system valve maintenance, line surveys and leak detection patrols.
- Locates mains and services when requested.
- Responds to gas leak calls and emergencies after-hours as required.
- Maintains appropriate system records and reports.
- Paints meters, regulator stations and other equipment related to gas distribution.
Other Job Duties- Performs maintenance on equipment and building grounds
- Performs checks of gas substations when needed.
- Performs related work as required.
Primary Job Challenges- Maintaining a working knowledge of the various facets of gas utility construction, repair and maintenance.
- Performing manual labor with other crew members to install or repair gas lines.
Equipment Operated- Light and heavy equipment such as a trencher or boring machine, etc.
- Automobile and/or truck including a dump truck with a two-way radio.
- Desktop computer and basic office equipment including a printer, copier, and calculator.
Key Competencies Required- Knowledge in construction, repair, and maintenance of natural gas pipelines.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with the work as well as the safety precautions to be taken.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform manual utility work under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to operate specialized construction equipment and tools specific to the gas industry.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and determine the proper course of action.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the general public and city employees.
Physical Demands and Work Environment- Employee will work both indoors and outdoors and will sit, stand, stoop, walk, and lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds).
- Employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, loud noises, fumes, chemicals, and other toxic substances.
- Employee may also be exposed to potentially hazardous situations.
QualificationsEducation and Experience: Graduation from a standard high school with experience in pipeline construction and maintenance or related construction industry experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.
Required Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee and must obtain a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License. Must possess Operator Qualification (OQ) or fulfill the requirement for OQ upon hiring to comply with the Office of Pipeline Safety of the U. S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Qualification of Pipeline Personnel Regulation (49 CFR Part 192, Subpart N and Part 195, Subpart G). Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician. This position is subject to DOT Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug and alcohol testing as outlined in 49 CFR Part 199.
