Summary Description:
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).Physical Demands:As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.Special Requirements:Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS. The courses are designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly courses in behavioral management which include nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments. Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support. Works well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities. Ability to appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and the ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Education Training Experience:
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in special education.. Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment required. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
