MCPS Official Job Description

Summary Description:

Under the direction of the school principal and the special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities. The teacher works collaboratively with general education teachers, monitors and evaluates student outcomes, and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Special Requirements:

Required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific MCPS-provided courses, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions. Support for behavioral interventions is also required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, IEPs, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, and relevant policies such as ESSA 2015 and IDEA 2004.
  • Ability to provide instructional support, adapt programs and materials, and work effectively with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS) standards.
Education, Training, and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited institution.
  • Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of relevant teaching experience.
Certificate and License:

Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
